A collaboration between Lissom + Muster and Britain's best bag and leather goods maker, Cherchbi. Featuring some reworked classics from the Cherchbi archive, alongside entirely new products created for us.
Inspired by Britain's creative and cultural heritage, Cherchbi craft bags, belts, hats and other good things in a robust, traditional, yet beautiful manner. Expect vegetable-tanned English saddle leather, Herdwick wool tweed, cotton canvas, solid brass and pewter - each element made in the British Isles with wonderful attention to detail.
Established in 2007, the company began with an idea to make bags using wool from the ancient rare-breed Herdwick sheep. Herdwick fleece is considered almost worthless and often burned, yet the breed has a 1,000-year heritage and worthy reputation as Britain’s hardiest mountain sheep. After four years and nine weave trials this low value fleece was transformed by Cherchbi into high quality cloth - Herdwyck No. 10: A new waterproof British tweed as robust as the Herdwick sheep itself. After the success of our original collaboration using this material, we decied to try something different for 2016.
All Cherchbi leathers have been developed with the help of Joseph Clayton of Chesterfield, Derbyshire - leather tanners since 1840. Their leathers originate from Northern Irish cow hide and are pit-tanned using vegetable tannins. This is an ancient process, essentially unchanged for thousands of years. The unique marks, lines, creases and colours that differentiate each hide make each item unique. Cherchbi use the original surface of the hide, or top-grain and retain any individual marks and creases. This is cut at 3mm, unusually thick for bags, and left unbacked so every aspect of the leather is visible.
As part of our collaboration, Cherchbi have used a premium 24oz canvas from Halley Stevens of Dundee, Scotland. They have been creating waxed materials since 1864 and their expertise dates back centuries, honed by serving generations of sailors and fibre merchants.
Brass and Pewter metal ware is cast and tooled in England. Cherchbi use Swiss-made Riri zips, widely considered to be the finest quality zip available, as unfortunately no British zip makers exist.
Cherchbi’s cotton bag lining is sourced from a mill in Lancashire.
All bags are made entirely in Britain to a robust, traditional quality standard utilising traditional leatherwork and saddlery techniques. The combination of natural materials - waterproof Halley Stevenson 24oz canvas, British saddle leather, brass hardware and 100% cotton lining - all age together harmoniously with use.
